Taking Your Twins to the Dentist

Taking Your Twins to the Dentist

As a parent, it’s important to make sure your the teeth of your twins are in tip-top shape. In addition to making sure they brush twice a day and floss once daily, you should take them to the dentist every six months ago. So, should you take your twins to the same dentist? Or, take one child to one dentist and one child to another?

If you want to make your life easier, there’s no reason you shouldn’t take them to the same dentist. By doing so, you can save a great deal of time and hassle. Also, taking your twins to the same dentist can give them the opportunity to bond over things that kids love about the dentist: goodie bags, contests, and a fun waiting area.

Taking your twins to the dentist is a first line of defense against common dental problems such as:

  • Plaque: Plaque is a white substance that develops on the teeth when saliva and bacteria come in contact with food. Regular dentist visits paired with good oral hygiene can loosen and remove plaque from your twins’ teeth.

  • Tooth Decay: Tooth decay is the result of tiny holes or cavities from in the teeth. Since plaque is the most common cause of tooth decay, keeping it out of your twins’ teeth is essential.

  • Halitosis: Also known as bad breath, halitosis is caused by an unhealthy build up of plaque and inflammation of the gums. By maintaining clean gums and teeth, your twins can avoid this condition.

Often times, one twin is excited to go to the dentist and the other is afraid of the dentist. If you can relate to this situation, here are some tips:

  • Ask your excited twin to tell your afraid twin why they love the dentist.

  • Read a story to both of your twins that explains why it’s so important to go to the dentist.

  • Reward both of your twins after the dentist with a trip to their favorite restaurant or a movie night.
